Fifth International Workshop on Geographic Information Extraction from Texts (GeoExT)
will be held at the 49th European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR 2027) in Southampton, UK, March 21-25, 2027
A wealth of unstructured textual content contains geographic information that can support a wide range of applications, including geographic search, disaster management, spatial humanities, and disease surveillance. These applications involve different types of text and languages, focus on different geographic regions, operate at scales ranging from small collections to large data streams, and require varying levels of geographic detail. Despite recent advances in geographic information extraction from text (GeoExT), including the growing use of large language models, existing approaches still struggle to meet these diverse requirements, particularly in settings with limited computational resources or limited support for certain languages and regions. At the same time, combining geolocated textual information with other data sources, such as images and Earth observation data, offers new opportunities for addressing real-world geographic problems and remains an important area for further research.
The Fifth GeoExT Workshop will provide a forum for discussing methodological advances, application-driven solutions, dataset creation and evaluation, and the integration of text with complementary data sources. By focusing on methods tailored to different application needs and constraints, the workshop aims to strengthen both the methodological foundations and real-world applicability of GeoExT.
The workshop is supported by the Working Group ( Global Mapping for SDGs ) of ISPRS Technical Commission IV/III.
